I have seen a lot of good and bad movies in 2017. However, there was one movie that delivered the best performance by an actress in any leading role and became my favorite film of the year. There is one movie that people won’t be able to stop talking or forget about. That movie is “I, Tonya.”
That person who delivers a truly great performance in this movie is Margot Robbie. “I, Tonya” also stars Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney, who have given their best performances as well.
So, why should audiences skate their way to movie theaters just to see “I, Tonya?” Because when people hear that it’s a sports movie, they would expect an inspirational and uplifting movie. However, this is not that kind of sports movie. In my opinion, this film is “The Wolf Of Wall Street” and “GoodFellas” of sports movies.
“I, Tonya” is the story of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding. As Harding rises amongst the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but her future is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes, and then the two end up as the prime suspects in the Nancy Kerrigan knee smashing case. The story of what ends up happening to Nancy Kerrigan becomes the #1 story of the 1990’s, second to all of Bill Clinton’s scandals.
“I, Tonya,” was really an incredible film. Wow. Wow. Wow. This film is definitely one of the biggest Oscar Contenders for the 2018 Oscars. Honestly, give every single award to Margot Robbie and forget about Meryl Streep (“The Post”) and Frances McDormand (“Three Buildboards”). Yes, both actresses were good in their movies, but Margot Robbie delivers the most flawless performance of her career.
Robbie has even been at the top of her game since 2013’s “The Wolf Of Wall Street.” Now, she gives her best performance in one of the wildest, craziest, most fun movies of 2017.
What a movie and what a crazy and unbelievable sports story. Everyone in this movie is terrific, especially Allison Janney who continues to take home the gold in the Best Supporting Actress category in every award show as Tony’s crazy, ruthless, foul-mouthed mother.
What could have been a boring character suddenly turned into something special and it will keep you guessing as to what the real story of Tonya Harding truly was, and whether or not she was the mastermind behind smashing Nancy Kerrigan’s Knee.
Another thing that I loved about this movie is that each character was talking to the audience about their side of what happened to Kerrigan, and that’s an element in what Scorsese used in “Goodfellas” “Casino” and “Wolf Of Wall Street”. David O’Russel also did that for “American Hustle” one of my all-time favorites as well.
Overall, “I, Tonya,” is outrageous, wild, and funny and it will make you keep on guessing the whole time and that’s why it’s the best movie of the year.
