The popular daytime comedy talk show “Ellen” recently began a partnership with General Mills, a U.S.-based food company, to donate food and school supplies to different organizations across the country through a program called #OneMillionActsOfGood.
The program has sent “You Matter” boxes containing educational supplies and nutritional General Mills products to various dining providers across the country. Chartwells Dining has been chosen as one of the college food services to help participate in this program. Chartwells, through Sacred Heart Dining, chose to work with Alpha Delta Pi because of their work with their national philanthropy, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).
#OneMillionActsOfGood is an initiative started through the generous donations of Ellen DeGeneres and General Mills,” said Alpha Delta Pi’s Philanthropy Chair, Luciana Gizzo. “As part of the ‘You Matter Movement’, this challenge aims to involve students on college campuses to make a difference in their community.”
Chartwells donated 150 of their 300 “You Matter” boxes to the Alpha Delta Pi chapter at Sacred Heart to be given to the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven.
“I was so humbled and honored that they chose us because I knew I could use this as an opportunity to not only inspire my sisters and the SHU community but also impact the families of RMHC in a great way,” said Gizzo.
The Ronald McDonald House is an international organization dedicated to serving families whose children are receiving medical care at nearby hospitals for serious conditions. Their goal is to provide these families with the ability to stay together while their child receives the care they need at a hospital in close proximity.
“The Ronald McDonald House is a wonderful support system for families in need and I love being closely partnered with it through Alpha Delta Pi. I hope the #OneMillionActsOfGood movement will aid in growing this wonderful organization,” said junior Brooke Chesler.
On Wednesday, Feb. 28, 50 members of Alpha Delta Pi went to the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven to package 150 of the “You Matter” boxes. These boxes were later donated to the families staying at RMHC-CT in New Haven, as well as distributed to a Ronald McDonald House in Springfield, Mass.
Sacred Heart students had the opportunity to join Alpha Delta Pi and the #OneMillionActsOfGood challenge by writing encouraging letters to children staying at the Ronald McDonald House, reminding them that they matter. The notes were later added to the “You Matter” boxes.
“The notes along with the boxes have already impacted the families’ spirits and when I met with one of the families, they said they were most grateful for the little things like that,” said Gizzo.
Alpha Delta Pi will be hosting a fundraising trivia event for RMHC from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm on March 14th in the UC Auditorium. The event is called “Trivia and Treats.” There will be raffle prizes consisting of Beats Headphones, Soul Cycle classes, Subway and Panera gift cards and hair care packages.
Trivia teams are made up of three members and the cost is $10.00 to participate. General admission tickets are $5.00 in advance and $7.00 at the door. The tickets include an all-you-can-eat buffet of pies, ice cream sundaes, cupcakes, and Insomnia Cookies.
“Being a part of the #OneMillionActsOfGood movement has been so great. We’ve worked so hard with Chartwells to make a big impact on our community and hope to have a successful event on March 14th,” said senior Lauren Kelly.
