Poet’s Corner: What Can I Do

What can I do when I hear those words?

What can I do when I see those signs?

What can I do when I notice a glance, or a stare or the clutching of a purse, I feel so unprepared.

What can I do when videos pop up?

What can I do when it’s on the news?

What can I do when people I love crumble with fear from those up above?

What can I do when I feel the hate?

What can I do when I see the blood?

What can I do when my skin gives me power, yet all I can do is cower?

What I can do is stand up.

What I can do is fight

What I can do is learn, and change, and educate, and discuss, and challenge, and ask questions, and write, and remain.

What I can’t do is ignore.

What I can’t do is pretend.

And what I refuse to do is be silent to this misery and land on the wrong side of history.
