After a run time of 13 years, the E! reality show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” has officially been cancelled. The airing of the show’s 20th and final season has already been set for 2021.

The official announcement was posted to several of the Kardashians’ social media platforms on Tuesday September 8th. The statement posted was signed by Kris Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian West, Khloé Kardashian, Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Scott Disick.

“After what will be 14 years, 20 seasons, hundreds of episodes and several spin-off shows, we’ve decided as a family to end this very special journey,” stated in the announcement.

“Wait what they’re cancelled! Why would they do that?” Said senior Julia Scherer when informed on the news of the shows cancellation.

Although the reason for the show’s cancellation has not yet been confirmed by the family or E!, many fans, news outlets, and even other television networks think it is due to the recent decline in ratings.

A theory presented by Vox states that this decline stems mostly from the nature of social media, and how the news surrounding the Kardashians makes online headlines and gets resolved by the time the corresponding episode comes out. The episodes then, are fans and followers’ second time hearing the ‘old news’ surrounding the family.

The official posting by the family also said ‘thank you’ to E!, the production team at Bunim/Murray, and executive producer of the show Ryan Seacrest. E! has since given statements to sources such as Variety saying that E! was “the home and extended family” to the Kardashian-Jenners for many years.

“Without ‘Keeping Up with The Kardashians,’ I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who has watched and supported me and my family these past 14 incredible years,” wrote Kim Kardashian-West to her 188 million social media followers.

After the show’s premiere in 2007, the family has been very much in the public eye and launched many new businesses such as cosmetics companies, apps, and clothing lines. The show has also been credited with making “Kardashian” a common household name.

“When I heard about the Kardashians ending, I really couldn’t believe it. They have really shaped the culture that we live in, from Instagram to fashion and beauty” said senior Devin Gavigan. “I’m super interested to see what is next for them and for pop-culture now that the show is no longer airing.”
