On March 11, Tom Hanks announced that he and his wife, Rita Wilson, have tested positive for coronavirus.

American actor Hanks is currently in Australia shooting a movie. Hanks has been a household name for decades due to many roles in his career, such as the title character of “Forrest Gump” and Woody in the “Toy Story” franchise.

Hanks posted an announcement on Instagram sharing his and his wife’s diagnosis and plan to handle the situation.

Hanks’ post said, “We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the three main symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough and shortness of breath.

Hanks and his wife decided to get tested given the threat of the coronavirus and the nature of their symptoms, according to his Instagram post.

“I think that someone who is famous like Hanks who was tested positive for the virus is seen as a big deal because he is a well-known actor. I also think it scares people on how real this virus is,” said sophomore Samantha Messina.

Hanks has been posting Instagram updates about he and his wife’s journey through this time. The posts show the pair keeping busy in self-isolation by folding laundry, doing dishes, and playing card games.

“Seeing Hanks post about testing positive for the virus makes me feel like it really is a problem in our world today. That no matter who you are, no one is immune,” said sophomore Siena Lazzara

Chet Hanks, son of Hanks and Wilson, posted a video about his parents’ diagnosis. In the video, Chet Hanks talked about how they aren’t that sick, it’s not anything to be too worried about and thanked everyone for their concerns and well-wishes.

Messina said, “I think Hanks’ son posting this video keeps people calm and not as scared, but we should be worried. People should still be aware this isn’t a small thing and should still be taking precautions.”

The number of celebrities with the virus is growing, including British star Idris Elba and American actress Rachel Matthews, according to social media announcements.

Elba posted on twitter, “I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic.”

According to the CDC, you can prepare by knowing the signs and symptoms; protecting yourself and family by staying home; cleaning frequently; and staying informed.

Hanks and other celebrities are taking action and listening to guidelines in order to get better.

“The virus is a scary thing and some people are brushing it off as it not being so serious when it is. Hanks and other celebrities posting are spreading awareness. People look up to celebrities and follow what they do,” said Lazzara. “Hanks is doing it right.”
