The celebration for the women’s rights movement as well as women’s accomplishments and achievements occurs every year on March 8, and is more commonly known as International Women’s Day.

According to the International Women’s Day website, the day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s and is recognized all over the world. It is a day that is meant to celebrate the achievements of women. The week leading up to International Women’s Day is known as International Women Build Week, spanning from March 1 through March 8.

Sophomore Simona Bruno attended a Habitat for Humanity trip to North Carolina during International Women Build Week. On the trip Bruno was able to help build a home alongside workers, the future homeowner, and other students from Sacred Heart.

“When you think of construction and worksites, you automatically link it up to men doing all the work. However, Habitat proves and makes it known that us women can do the exact same work as men on the worksite,” said Bruno.

“Working during International Women’s Build Week was truly amazing to see all of us girls being together and finally getting the recognition and the appreciation of the work we put in,” said Bruno.

There are other work fields that are dominated by the male gender as well; Sports Communication is one of them. Lauren Baker is in her second year of being a Graduate Assistant for Sports Communication and Media Masters Program. Baker is attending school for Sports Broadcasting.

“I feel empowered, because women can do anything men can do,” said Baker.

Camila Cayere is another second-year graduate student who is pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Communication and Media with a Sports Broadcasting concentration.

“I’ve learned through my college career and my various jobs in the field that I can’t be afraid to be outspoken and myself when going into a field dominated by men,” said Cayere.

Sports Broadcasting and construction work are not the only male-dominated work fields there are. There is also dentistry. Bruno’s future goal is to become a Dentist someday.

However, Bruno looks at the positives and tries to remain confident in herself, even with the male-dominated field she hopes to enter one day.

“I would say I set myself apart from the rest by staying confident in myself and open to learning and trying new things,” said Bruno. “Having the right mindset with an optimistic attitude towards life is what always gets me through the day.”

Baker, Cayere and Bruno try to remain positive and be themselves while working in fields dominated by men.

“It’s a great time to be a woman trying to break in sports world because of the impact the women who are already in the industry are making,” said Baker

Hard work and dedication are some of the things that can set an individual above the rest, whether you are male or female, whatever the field you are trying to enter.

“I feel like once you get the job you need to work 110% to prove yourself to your boss and to make yourself stand out,” said Baker.

According to the International Women’s Day website, this is a day for women to be recognized, but is not specific to one area. It is a day that is meant for everyone, everywhere to recognize and appreciate the accomplishments of women.

“Every year the women percentage in the sports media industry increases and I don’t see that slowing down any time soon,” said Cayere.
