Out With the Old and in With the New

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, ABC aired the premier of season 16 of “The Bachelorette,” an annual reality television show that usually follows one woman as she narrows down 31 men to find her fiancé.

This season, 39-year-old Clare Crawley set the record for being the oldest bachelorette.

“I was a little confused by the choice but was excited for the new season,” said senior Meaghan Hynes.

Some students shared Hynes’s excitement but were disappointed by the way the season has gone so far.

“This season has been all about Clare and Dale so it has been boring and not as fun to watch as the previous season,” said sophomore Anne Butler.

Crawley found her fiancé by the fourth episode of the season and left the show. Dale Moss proposed to Crawley at the end of the episode on Nov. 5.

“I am annoyed that she settled so early in the show for a man,” said Butler.

Some students were frustrated by the way Crawley treated the other contestants.

“I was happy for the 16 men left by Clare because they all deserve someone who is going to give them an opportunity. They deserve better,” said junior Amber Harrison.

Harrison has been a fan of “The Bachelorette” since the age of 11 and watches every Tuesday.

“I was happy for Clare and Dale in the end, but I do not believe they will last,” said Harrison.

However, some students understand Crawley’s decision to leave the show.

“I feel like if she’s happy, then why not. I think it’s considerate not to waste the other people’s time on the show if she is happy with Dale,” said junior Chloe King.

“The Bachelorette” is filmed in advance, and the contestants are prohibited from leaking any information by contract. However, some students predicted Crawley’s exit.

“You could already tell in the episodes before they got engaged that the only person she cared about was Dale,” said sophomore Madeline Costello.

Crawley was replaced by 30-year-old Tayshia Adams. There were 16 men left from Crawley’s episodes, and ABC added four more.

On Nov. 10, fans watched as Adams stepped out of her limo to meet the 20 men.

“I’m really excited about Tayshia being the new bachelorette. She seems more mature and ready to settle down, so I hope that she finds what she is looking for,” said King.

Despite Crawley being older than most contestants, some students agree with King’s opinion on maturity.

“No more of Clare’s immaturity will be great,” said Costello.

Adams’s season is underway, and some students are looking forward to what it will bring.

“I think Tayshia’s journey will be more of a typical Bachelorette experience where she falls in love with multiple people on the show and gives the others a chance to get to know her before making a quick decision,” said King.
