Sacred Heart University (SHU) Athletics has announced $2 cash-only beer promotions are back for select games. This promotion is only available at select men’s basketball and hockey games. Students ages 21+ can participate while supplies last.
“More people are coming to the games, more people are having fun, and the energy is definitely up,” said junior Caitlyn Bergman.
The promotion has drawn in more Pioneers fans into the stands and contributed to a noticeable increase in game attendance to both basketball and hockey games.

“This caught my attention because it brought another social aspect to the game. I feel like it entices a lot of students to want to attend more sporting events as well,” said graduate student Rob Taylor. “It is always fun to have a few drinks while watching a game, but when most sports games have drinks that are more expensive, it steers you away from purchases.”
The promotion has gotten the attention of both undergraduate students of age and graduate students at Sacred Heart, making these games more popular for fans as a result.
“Every year, our marketing team plans out a promotional calendar that we hope will enhance the in-game experience for all fans, young and old,” said Athletic Director Judy Ann Riccio.
SHU Athletics does a variety of promotions throughout the year, such as free t-shirts and team hats that students and SHU fans can also be a part of.
“I feel like t-shirts and hats are more inclusive and anyone can participate, but as college students, the $2 beer is a good deal. You can get a couple of drinks for the price of one,” said Bergman.
The variety of promotions SHU Athletics has offered, such as t-shirts, hats, giveaways, and even donuts for a women’s soccer game, is encouraging fans to show up on game day.
“There have been promotions that I have been excited for, one specifically was the football t-shirts they did during the fall semester,” said Bergman.
“Often, we will test new promotions, and it has been our practice that following the season we evaluate each promotion and look for ways to improve and brainstorm new ideas to implement in the future,” said Riccio.
The newest promotion includes a hot dog shooter, which many fans enjoy.
“Promotions help build a livelier student section. Students are more excited to come support and be included in unique promotions,” said Taylor.
