English Club Spotlight

Sacred Heart University’s English Club consists of a diverse group of writers and readers who are passionate about reading, writing and creativity. The group works together as well as individually to enhance their ability to express themselves through their writing.

“The club is open to anyone with a passion for writing, creativity or discussing literature,” said Elizabeth Turello, President of English Club.

“Often as students, we become so absorbed with classes and the social aspect of school that we fail to engage with creative outlooks,” said Turello. “When a student joins English Club, they can express themselves freely in a safe, creative environment.”

Since Turello is a leading member of the club, the most rewarding feeling to her is recognizing that she is helping others to express themselves through their writing.

“I’ve met many fascinating students during my time as president, each one with a unique story to tell,” said Turello.

Students such as senior Kristen Miolene find that English Club has impacted their time at Sacred Heart in many positive ways.

“It is a great way to meet other English majors, but we have non-English majors as well,” said Miolene. “English Club creates a fun learning environment, and all of our members can work with one another and come up with many great topics to discuss.”

Miolene’s hopes for the future of the club rely on an increase of members and events.

“Some people might feel discouraged thinking this club is specifically for English majors. This is not true at all. It is more fun and beneficial to have a mix of students with different majors in our club,” said Miolene.

For years, the English Club remained small in numbers. This past semester, the club’s membership increased significantly. Turello’s hope for the next semester is that the club continues to grow.

“We plan on publishing another Chapbook next semester, so it would be fantastic if we could see new voices being a part of it,” said Turello.

The Chapbook is a publication of the members’ writings where students can express themselves and have their voices heard.

“Since COVID-19 has been so unpredictable, the English Club currently doesn’t have any major events planned. We are focusing on putting together our Chapbook,” said Turello.

Miolene also mentioned the Chapbook as one of her main focuses regarding the club.

“The English Club publishes a Chapbook each year with a different theme. We encourage all of our students in the club to contribute their own pieces,” said Miolene.

This year, the club is planning on publishing their Chapbook in December on the Barnes and Noble website, where it will be available to the public. The proceeds of the Chapbook will go toward the club with the hopes of being able to plan future events.

The only requirement to be able to join the English Club is an interest in and passion for writing or literature. Meetings for the club are held every Tuesday at 8 p.m. via Zoom.
