It was a typical day at the Giardullo household. After coming home from elementary school, Sabrina made it a daily routine to turn on one of her favorite TV channels after a long day of school.

“It was a part of my everyday routine when I came home from school,” said junior Sabrina Giardullo. “I would come home and immediately put on either Disney Channel or Nickelodeon, depending on what show was on. My classmates and I would always talk about the shows on Disney and Nickelodeon.”

Many students at Sacred Heart find themselves reminiscing about their favorite childhood TV shows. From Disney’s hit show “Wizards of Waverly Place” to Nickelodeon’s iconic “Zoey 101,” students explain why these shows were a big part of their upbringing.

“My favorite childhood TV show would be ‘Wizards of Waverley Place’ or ‘Hannah Montana.’ Obviously, being a child, I wished that I was famous or that I could have cool wizard powers. These shows were a major part of my childhood growing up,” said sophomore Katrina Nadolny.

Nadolny said that the comeback of one of her favorite childhood shows would be very interesting to see, but it would not live up to the original series.

“I doubt it would live up to the expectation of what it used to be because obviously I am not as young as I was, but I think it would be fun to look back and experience that nostalgia,” said Nadolny.

Giardullo said the idea of making a comeback for some childhood TV shows is a must watch, but thinks bringing back some shows would take away from the originality when they were first released.

“I think that some childhood TV shows should just be left as they were. I see the idea in bringing some shows back to life, but I never end up thinking the new series is as amazing as the original series was,” said Giardullo.

In July of 2017, Disney Channel aired a spinoff of the original series “That’s So Raven” called “Raven’s Home.” Junior Taylor Kelly believes that the spinoff was a great idea because it exposes what our generation’s TV shows were like to the current childhood generation.

“I love the idea that Disney brought back ‘That’s So Raven’ in a spinoff. I feel like it shows children who are watching Disney now a side of how we grew up,” said Kelly. “I feel that TV channels should continue this especially since it brings people who are adults now to think back to their childhood.”

In August of 2017, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney is launching their version of a streaming outlet called Disney+. The service will not only stream their old TV shows but will also be bringing back some original TV hits as spinoffs with the same cast.

Many students express their excitement about Disney+, knowing they are now able to get easy access to their favorite childhood TV shows.

“I am looking into getting Disney+ since you can not only watch new shows but all the old ones that I loved as well,” said freshman Ella D’Addona. “I’m sure I would binge watch them all again, especially my favorite show when I was younger, ‘Wizards of Waverly Place.’ I would love to see how I can relate to the show now.”

At the monthly rate of $6.99, the Disney+ streaming network will be available on Nov. 12.

“Although I believe that this new streaming network is a great idea, I would not purchase this for myself,” said sophomore Jackie Montano. “However, I do think it is a great way for children of this generation to get to experience the shows we were able to watch years ago.”
