Spooky Movie Season

Beware, Halloween is nearly here and things are about to get spooky. Will something scary be playing on your television screen this season?

If you are looking forward to watching Halloween movies this October you are not alone. Many students plan to celebrate this time of year by watching some of their favorite Halloween movies.

“Halloween is a great time of year because it’s exciting to see all the spooky decorations and costumes. It’s hard to choose just one Halloween movie, but some of my favorites are ‘Goosebumps,’ ‘Coraline,’ ‘Twitches,’ and ‘Corpse Bride.’ I watched these movies growing up and try to rewatch them every fall,” said junior Cara Gileau.

During the month of Oct. Disney Channel runs a nightly marathon to air their original Halloween movies. According to the Disney Channel website, their marathon “Monstober” will feature films including: “Halloweentown,” “Twitches” and “Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire.”

Junior Jennifer deBeus considers her favorite Halloween films to be Disney Channel original movies.

“I enjoy the happier Halloween movies,” said deBeus. “I do not enjoy the scary parts of Halloween. I don’t like scary decorations or scary costumes. My favorite Halloween movies would have to be either ‘Halloweentown’ or ‘Twitches’ because both have a cute and only semi-spooky theme to them.”

Similarly, senior Nina Lauria also favors Disney’s “Halloweentown.”

“My favorite Halloween movie is ‘Halloweentown.’ There is not really a specific reason that it is my favorite, other than the fact that I used to watch it religiously when I was little. It reminds me of my awesome childhood,” said Lauria.

While many students seemingly enjoy watching Halloween movies, others find them to be too scary for their liking.

“I think Halloween as a holiday overall is a weird concept. Halloween movies are one of my least favorite genres. From the start, I have always hated horror movies, and as a kid, Halloween movies are basically horror movies. They have always creeped me out and to this day, I can’t get myself to enjoy them,” said junior Shannon Malone.

However, for those who do enjoy Halloween movies, numerous horror films will be playing in theaters during the month of Oct. “IT: Chapter Two” was released in theaters Sept. 6.

“I actually don’t mind Halloween because it’s the time where all the new Halloween horror films come out which are always fun to see! In the last couple of years, I’ve become a Halloween movie person. I’ve been very anxious to go see the New ‘IT: Chapter Two’ movie as I loved the first one,” said senior Kevin Gillotti.

Gileau is also looking forward to checking out the new “IT: Chapter Two” film in theaters.

“The second ‘IT’ movie just recently came out, so I definitely am interested in that after going to see the first movie two years ago,” said Gileau.

According to census.gov, an estimated 4,400 motion picture theaters played Halloween-related films on Oct. 31 of 2018.

This Halloween, you can catch “The Addams Family,” “Joker” and “The Countdown” playing in theaters.

“I love Halloween. I feel like Halloween can give everyone something to enjoy whether you’re into spooky things or not,” said Lauria.
